Creating access to education through creativity
28 September 2021, Johannesburg - OPPO together with Community Chest and OLICO Maths Education NPC have partnered to create wider access to education in South Africa. The collaboration aims to further invest in the youth by activating a variety of programmatic interventions and social investment strategies that create opportunities to connect students to wider access to education.
The Times-table Challenge
The Times-Tables Challenge is a programme offered by OLICO that is designed to help Grade 7 - 9 learners get on top of their times-tables. The challenge allows participating learners to work together as a group to develop the fluency that is essential for more complex high school mathematics. The challenge plays out across four rounds of 15 learners in each round. The top 3 learners from each round participate in a final round. Thereby the top 12 learners compete for a spot on the podium, in the final round.
Successfully hosting the Times-table Challenge at the OLICO Centre in Diepkloof, the partnership saw 60 learners from various schools across Johannesburg compete to win a variety of prizes including airtime and meal vouchers courtesy of KFC.
OPPO’s Commitment
OPPO, which celebrates its first year in South Africa this month, continues to invest in the country and via the partnership, donated an operational grant of R40 000 to the OLICO Maths Education NPC.
“The education of the youth is a critical part of the success of South Africa, and we recognise the need to create access and opportunities to better levels of learning. With this partnership, we’re committed to creating a platform that connects young people to resources, support and infrastructure that makes learning more effective.” says Avashnee Moodley, Head of Marketing at OPPO South Africa.
The theme, Strength in Numbers, highlights the need to further invest in education for scholars, and OPPO supports this by aligning to the 2030 NDP Plan on education, specifically to Math and Science.
Further to this, the technology brand has also donated 18 of its smart devices to the OLICO center as part of the Times-table challenge and to form part of the center’s device stock after the event, while a further two A74 5G devices were awarded to learners during a raffle draw.
The way forward
Through ongoing social investment, the partnership continues to highlight the need to create sustainable impact in local communities.
“We are working on leveraging greater access to affordable, world-class technology that can be used to create simulated environments for kids to explore the possibilities of learning.” concludes Moodley.
As the next step in the partnership between OPPO South Africa and Community Chest, a bespoke bursary programme will be developed to be offered to tertiary education students in 2022.
